The Power of Love to Overcome Autism
One of the most underestimated forces in this world is love. With a simple touch, it can break down walls. It seeps deep into our souls and has a life-giving quality about it. Like water to a desert-parched traveler, it restores. Without it, we wither. Love changes us. It has an ability to open our eyes to see a person or child as God does: beautiful and divinely created. Love enables us to go just a little farther, to give just a little more, even when we feel that weâve reached the very end of our rope. Love multiplies itself, having a strange quality of never running out. The more it is given, the more it returns to us.
One of loveâs many mysteries is that as we empty ourselves of âself,â we create a place for Godâs love to abide. As we give to others, we are given more; as we love others, we become more aware of the Fatherâs great love for us. Itâs as if we are a great channel, an open vessel, for Godâs love to flow through. We are His arms, His hands, and His feet. When we chose to love, His divine presence fills our lives with joy, peace, and a sense of purpose. We are, at last, fulfilled.
Love bolsters our children, enabling them to keep on going. Love encourages, supports, and strengthens. Love chooses to look past the frail and confused exterior and see the full potential of a child, the potential to be more and do more than the world expects. Love verifies the worth of each child when the world demeans him or her. It carries our children when they cannot carry themselves.
When we love a child who has autism, something profound happens to us. I see the truth of this statement again and again as I get to know other parents of autistic kids. These parents are some of the most radiant beings on this earth. Even struggling with all of the responsibilities they face, they have a beauty and a strength about them. There is a sincerity in their smile. They are as strong as the young warrior David. I know of many parents who have risen above autism. No one can tell them they canât make a difference for their child. They will not take no for an answer when reaching out for help for their child. They take the worst that the world can give and in the process leave it a better placeâall because they are continually being strengthened by the giving and receiving of love via a child with autism.
I know that Iâve been changed for the better in knowing Alec. Never before did I have a passion for children as I do now. Prior to this journey, the biggest dream I possessed was simply to be a star employee in the marketing department where I worked. Never did I have a dream of making a difference for others or of encouraging another to be more, do more, or live in a better way.
